Here are the most fetch pink celebrations of ‘Mean Girls’ Day

news image

If you’re not wearing pink today, sorry to say it, but “you can’t sit with us.”

For those of you unfortunate human beings who haven’t seen Mean Girls, allow me to explain why Oct. 3 is the most important holiday in our society. It all stems from a scene in the movie where Cady Heron, who is played by Lindsay Lohan, tells her crush Aaron Samuels the date, and it was Oct. 3.

On top of that, The Plastics (the group of girls who Cady is kinda forced into) make it a rule that on Wednesdays they must wear pink. So having Oct. 3 land on a Wednesday this year is literally the ultimate formula for the best Mean Girls Day ever.

And Twitter was obviously so here for it.

Other users really took their pink game to unexpected levels that would impress Regina George (maybe). Even Burger King got the memo.

And of course, you can’t have a true Mean Girls Day without a ton of memes.

Happy Oct. 3 everyone! May your outfits be pink, and may “fetch” remain a thing that never really happens.

Trump mocks Christine Blasey Ford over Kavanaugh allegations

news image

US President Donald Trump drew strong criticism from both Republicans and Democrats after mocking Christine Blasey Ford, who accused Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, of sexually assaulting her decades ago.

At a campaign rally in Mississippi rally on Tuesday, the audience laughed as Trump ran through a list of what he described as holes in Ford’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Last week, she testified that Kavanaugh pinned her on a bed, tried to take off her clothes and covered her mouth in the early 1980s, when the two were teenagers. Kavanaugh has denied Ford’s allegations.

“How did you get home? ‘I don’t remember,’” Trump said at the rally Tuesday in Southaven. “How did you get there? ‘I don’t remember.’ Where is the place? ‘I don’t remember.’ How many years ago was it? ‘I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know.’”

Imitating Ford, he added, “But I had one beer – that’s the only thing I remember.”

It marked the sharpest criticism by Trump of Ford since she came forward publicly with the allegation last month. He had previously called Ford a “very credible witness”, while continuing to back Kavanaugh.

‘Vicious, vile and soulless’

Ford’s lawyer Michael Bromwich called Trump’s attack “vicious, vile and soulless”.

“Is it any wonder that she was terrified to come forward, and that other sexual assault survivors are as well?” Bromwich tweeted. “She is a remarkable profile in courage. He is a profile in cowardice.”

Arizona Republican Senator Jeff Flake told NBC’s Today show on Wednesday that mocking “something this sensitive at a political rally is just not right.”

“I wish he hadn’t done it,” Flake said. “It’s kind of appalling.” Flake is a key GOP vote in the confirmation battle, and while he said last week he would vote to confirm Kavanaugh, he also called for an expanded FBI investigation that resulted in a one-week delay. Flake has not said how he will vote if the nomination comes up this week.

Republican Senator Susan Collins, who is also considered a swing vote on the Kavanaugh nomination, called Trump’s remarks “plain wrong”.

Trump was also lambasted online, including by many Democrats.

Feminist author Jessica Valenti tweeted: “I don’t have it in me to say something outraged about Trump mocking Dr Blasey Ford. It’s all just so horrible and depressing.”

Democratic Senator Kamala Harris, who is on the Senate Judiciary Committee, tweeted that Ford “deserves better”.

The president was in Mississippi on Tuesday looking to use his influence to sway the outcome of a low-profile election that could tip the balance of the Senate.

As Republicans fight headwinds ahead of the November 6 midterm elections, Trump sought to rally his supporters behind Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, who was appointed to fill the seat of Thad Cochran, who retired in April. She faces three candidates – Republican Chris McDaniel and Democrats Mike Espy and Tobey Bernard Bartee – in next month’s special election for the remainder of the two-year term.

Trump spent much of the rally, however, lamenting the treatment of Kavanaugh by Democrats, whose attacks, he said, had taken their toll on the judge’s family.

“A man’s life is in tatters,” he said. Of Democrats, he added, “These are really evil people.”

He raised questions about the drinking habits of Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy in an attempt to turn the tables on Democrats who have gone after Kavanaugh’s beer drinking. Trump told the crowd they should do an online search for “Patrick Leahy slash drink.” Leahy’s office didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment on Tuesday.

Republican officials and the White House expect Hyde-Smith’s race to go to a runoff under the state’s election rules that force a showdown between the top two finishers if no candidate wins at least 50 percent of the vote on November 6. With Republicans defending majorities in the House and Senate next month, officials cast Trump’s visit as an attempt to get ahead of a potentially perilous situation.

Officials said Trump is seeking to boost Hyde-Smith as close as possible to the 50 percent threshold and lend momentum for a possible runoff. Depending on how Republicans perform on November 6, the eyes of the nation could fall on a November 27 Mississippi runoff in what could become an expensive and high-profile race to determine control of the Senate.

Ford’s lawyer questions FBI probe

Hours before Trump’s speech, Ford’s lawyers sent a letter to FBI Director Chris Wray saying they’ve received no response from anyone involved in the reopened background investigation Kavanaugh.

Ford’s lawyers said it is “inconceivable” that the FBI could conclude its investigation, which could happen as early as Wednesday, without interviewing either her, Kavanaugh or all of the other witnesses whose names she has provided. In the letter, the lawyers ask for a call with Wray or the supervisory special agent in charge of the investigation.

Trump ordered the FBI to reopen the investigation into Kavanaugh last week after a dramatic last-minute demand by Senator Flake during the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote on the nominee. Before casting the decisive vote in favour of Kavanaugh, Flake asked the panel to request the Trump administration to pursue an FBI probe of the explosive allegations against Kavanaugh. A day before the vote, both Ford and Kavanaugh offered emotional testimony on the allegations.

The controversy over Kavanaugh is unfolding against a backdrop of the #MeToo movement fighting sexual harassment and assault.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in three women in the United States experience some form of sexual violence in their lives. About 63 percent of sexual assaults in the US are not reported to the police. More than 90 percent of sexual assault survivors on US college campuses do not report the incident.

Republicans plan careful steps to protect secrecy of FBI report on Brett Kavanaugh

President Trump mocked Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony against Supreme Court nominee Brett Ka
USA TODAY

WASHINGTON – Republicans are planning a careful choreography for the results of the FBI’s background probe into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, including sending only a single copy to Capitol Hill that will be housed in a safe.

The FBI report, which officials said will include summaries of interviews about Kavanuagh’s conduct in high school, will first go to the White House and then to the Senate Judiciary Committee, where it will be carried to senators’ offices on request.

Senate Republicans are planning the cautious approach amid a debate over how much of the FBI’s investigation into Kavanaugh’s past – including allegations of sexual assault – should be available for public view. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said only senators will be able to see the results of the FBI’s work. A very small handful of Senate aides may view it as well.

White House officials expect the report as early as Wednesday.

More: FBI could finish Brett Kavanaugh investigation Wednesday

Once the White House receives the report, a single copy will be sent to Capitol Hill, where it will be housed in a safe in the office of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said George Hartmann, a committee spokesman.

Nine staff members are cleared to review the document, in addition to all 100 senators, Hartmann said.

The report will amount to a background file with separate documents, including interview summaries, officials said. White House officials said they do not expect to comment publicly on the report but may confirm its receipt because of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Kavanaugh’s nomination.

The Justice Department has referred questions about the probe to the White House.

The main focus of the investigation has been on accusations raised by Christine Blasey Ford, who says she was sexual assaulted by Kavanaugh while both were in high school 36 years ago. Ford has acknowledged difficulty in remembering details of the episode, including where and when it happened.

The FBI had not contacted Ford as of Wednesday morning, her lawyers said.

Republicans described the steps taken to protect the report as standard, noting a memorandum of understanding dictates the handling of similar files. But a number of Republican senators have said they believe, in this case, that at least some portion of the document should be available for public review.

It is not clear whether the document will draw conclusions about the allegations, but experts say they think that is unlikely.

Michael Mukasey, a former U.S. Attorney General under President George W. Bush, said the supplemental FBI background investigation would cover current and credible allegations of misconduct. But the FBI likely won’t try to resolve disputes between conflicting witnesses, and witnesses wouldn’t be tested by polygraph, he said.

Mukasey spoke with reporters on a call organized by Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative group that backs Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

“The FBI doesn’t make credibility determinations about ultimate facts,” Mukasey predicted in a conference call Tuesday with reporters. “They simply present the statements of witnesses so that the senators who are the ultimate deciders can make their decision.”

The report was the result of a dramatic and emotional hearing before the Judiciary Committee last week in which both Ford and Kavanaugh told their stories. Sen. Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican, voted to advance Kavanaugh’s nomination but called for the reopening of the investigation into his background.

Flake, who is retiring after this year, said the nomination would be “over” if the FBI found he lied to the committee.

Key Republican swing votes are condemning Trump’s ‘appalling’ mocking of Christine Blasey Ford

news image

Two key Republican senators condemned President Donald Trump’s mockery of Christine Blasey Ford, whose allegation that Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when the two were teenagers has stalled the Supreme Court nominee’s confirmation process.

Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, called the president’s comments at a Tuesday night rally in Mississippi “just plain wrong.” And Sen. Jeff Flake, who forced an FBI investigation into the multiple sexual misconduct allegations against the judge, said that mocking “something this sensitive at a political rally is just not right.”

Both lawmakers have not yet said how they’ll vote on Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Flake added during his Wednesday interview on the “Today” show: “I wish he hadn’t have done it. I just say it’s kind of appalling.”

During a Tuesday night rally, Trump derisively imitated Ford, delivering a series of questions and answers mocking the California professor’s Senate testimony as the crowd laughed and cheered.

“Thirty-six years ago this happened. I had one beer, right? I had one beer,” Trump said. “How did you get home? I don’t remember. How’d you get there? I don’t remember. Where is the place? I don’t remember. … But I only had one beer, that’s the only thing I remember.”

Flake and Collins have both said they won’t make a final decision on Kavanaugh’s confirmation until the FBI completes its investigation into the allegations. One other Republican senator, Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski, and two Democrats, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, have also not yet announced whether they’ll vote to confirm Kavanaugh.

On Tuesday evening, one of Ford’s attorneys, Michael Bromwich, called the president’s comments “a vicious, vile and soulless attack.”

“Is it any wonder that she was terrified to come forward, and that other sexual assault survivors are as well? She is a remarkable profile in courage. He is a profile in cowardice,” he tweeted.

Last week, Trump described Ford as a “credible witness” and a “very fine woman.”

“I thought her testimony was very compelling, and she looks like a very fine woman to me, very fine woman,” Trump said on Friday.

Halloween clip: Laurie Strode relives the horrors of 40 years ago

news image

For more on Halloween, pick up the new issue of Entertainment Weekly on stands now, or buy it here. Don’t forget to subscribe for more exclusive interviews and photos, only in EW.

Among the new characters introduced in the horror sequel Halloween (out Oct. 19) are a pair of true crime podcasters, played by Rhian Rees and Jefferson Hall, who have come to Haddonfield to investigate the murders committed by the masked killer Michael Myers 40 years previously.

“They are studying the crimes of 1978 to learn more about the mindset of a madman,” says director and co-writer David Gordon Green. “They accidentally stir up the hornet’s nest.”

“I thought it was very clever, very modern,” says Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis, who is reprising her role as the Myers-battling Laurie Strode. “These British documentarians add that global fascination with true crime that now is very much part of the zeitgeist of all of our lives, if you’ve listened to Serial or [watched] Making a Murderer, or any of them, and I thought that was very clever.”

In Halloween, Laurie Strode faces off against Myers, this time with the help of her daughter, Karen (Judy Greer), and granddaughter, Allyson (Andi Matichak).

“The first movie I was running more, and in this movie I’m hunting more,” Curtis told EW earlier this year. “[You] watch this woman take back the narrative of her life.”

This wholesome Twitter account compares Chris Evans to soft, fluffy golden retrievers

news image

Uncanny.
Uncanny.

As dog people will tell you, golden retrievers are friendly, energetic, adorable as hell, and extremely lovable. But these four traits aren’t exclusive to pups — they also apply to actor and human golden retriever Chris Evans.

One enlightening day in September, the person behind the Twitter account @retrievans (who preferred to remain anonymous) noticed the similarities between the actor and sweet golden retrievers and decided to dedicate an entire account to proving the groundbreaking theory that they are one in the same.

Inspired by the “tessa as goats” account — it compares actress Tessa Thompson to cute little goats — @retrievans and friends began the hunt for photos of Evans that resembled retrievers. Spoiler alert: the results were spot-on… like, nearly uncanny.

“It has to do with Evans’ nature in general that reminded me a lot of goldens,” @retrievans said of the account via Twitter direct message.

At the time of writing, the “Chris Evans as Golden Retrievers” account had less than 15 tweets, but nearly 23,000 followers — including Evans himself! “Truth be told, I wasn’t expecting to receive this amount of response,” @retrievans said, adding that they’re truly grateful for the positive feedback and the chance to show Evans a token of gratitude for his work.

The account love is well-deserved, too. I mean, just look at these side-by sides. We’ve got Chris and a pup laughing.

And here’s Captain America and Captain America’s trusty sidekick. (Marvel, you paying attention?)

There’s Chris and a pup snuggling, repping their favorite football team, shooting some hoops, and goofing off.

Chris is a dog, it seems! I’m convinced!

It’s no surprise that Evans, who adopted his rescue pup Dodger in 2016, is undoubtedly a dog person, so it’s no surprise that he’s a fan of the account, too.

If you’re looking for a pure and wholesome escape from whatever else is on your Twitter feed, consider following. But be warned…by the time you’re done reviewing, the tweets you’ll have likely transformed into a retrievans truther.

Brooks Koepka ‘heartbroken’ after tee shot exploded woman’s eyeball, left her blinded

news image

USA TODAY Sports’ Steve DiMeglio says that even though Team USA has trouble winning overseas, it should still stick with its current formula.
USA TODAY Sports

American golfer Brooks Koepka said he’s “all messed up inside” since finding out that his errant tee shot at the Ryder Cup last Saturday caused spectator Corine Remande to lose sight in her right eye.

The 49-year-old woman from Egypt was watching the action at Le Golf National near Paris when Koepka’s wayward drive at the par-4 sixth hole struck her in the face.

Remande said that the force of the impact caused a fracture of her right eye socket and “explosion of the eyeball,” prompting doctors to tell her she likely wouldn’t see again.

“It’s a tragic accident, I’m heartbroken,” Koepka told reporters on Tuesday at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews Scotland. “It will definitely be the one shot I regret in my career. (The day he found out) was one of the worst days of my life.

“I’m torn up about it. She’s not going to be able to see out of her eye again and I hit the golf ball. It’s upsetting.”

The 28-year-old Koepka said he is trying to reach out to the woman’s family and wants to speak to Remande directly. He had previously expressed feeling “hurt and saddened” on Twitter

According to Golfweek, Remande is considering legal action against tournament organizers to pay for medical expenses. The European Tour, which manages the Ryder Cup, issued a statement Tuesday that noted the warning sign ‘fore’ was shouted several times. It plans to assist in Remande’s recovery, which included the transportation from Paris to Lyon, France — where her family resides.

The Tour’s statement read, in part: “It is distressing to hear that someone might suffer long-term consequences from a ball strike. … We have been in communication with the family involved, starting with the immediate on-course treatment and thereafter to provide support, helping with the logistics of repatriation. We will continue to offer support for as long as necessary.”

The Chronicles of Narnia being made into new movies by Netflix

news image

Break out the Turkish Delight, Netflix is taking on The Chronicles of Narnia.

The streaming service is adapting the beloved fantasy franchise into new films based on the seven fantasy novels that launched in 1950 with C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the WardrobeThe Chronicles of Narnia is the tale of four British children during World War II who escape into an alternate magical world.

“It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia, and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world,” said Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis, in a statement released by Netflix. “Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them towards this goal.”

It’s not yet clear how many pieces of content will be produced and what form they will take. Producer Mark Gordon describes “multiple productions” and “both stellar feature-length and episodic programming.” Gordon added, “Narnia is one of those rare properties that spans multiple generations and geographies.”

The Narnia books have been adapted several times before, most recently by Disney for three films — 2005’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, 2008’s Prince Caspian, and 2010’s The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. A film version of the fourth book in the saga, The Silver Chair, was supposed to start filming this year under director Joe Johnston with Gordon producing, but it sounds like this deal is effectively overwriting that one.

“C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer, Netflix. “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.”

One immediate concern of fans after the announcement was made was whether the Netflix versions would water down the books’ Christian themes — a frequent criticism of the titles distributed by Disney. “I do not trust Netflix to do justice for the series! They will be trying to take God out of it like other companies have [for other] Christian movies,” wrote one commenter on the official Narnia Facebook page.

The move comes as HBO goes into the final season of the biggest televised fantasy title of all time, Game of Thrones, and Amazon is working on a prequel adaption of The Lord of the Rings.
